Driver Improvement Programs

For drivers who want to deduct points from their current driver status, a driver improvement program can be taken in New Jersey.

Point violation program

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) Driver Improvement Program is offered as an alternative to a 30-day suspension for drivers who accumulate 12 to 14 points in more than a two-year period.  Up to three points will be removed from a driver’s record if the program is successfully completed.  There is a $100 fee for the program.

Probationary Driver Program

A probationary driver is someone whom has been issued a driver license permit for the first time.  During a two-year probation period, it is mandatory to enroll in the Probationary Driver School Program if a probationary driver is convicted of two or more moving violations with a total of four or more points.  There is a $100 fee for the program.

If the program is completed, a three-point reduction will occur and the driver will be placed on a one-year test period.  If the program is not completed, or if a violation occurs during the one-year test period, driving privileges will be suspended.
